Prior to your first visit, it is important that Dr. Modena has access to and reviews any medical visit notes, labs, or imaging that you have done in the past. This information will greatly enrich the conversation between yourself and the doctor and speed up the work-up process. Meaning that you may get your diagnosis earlier and start your San Diego eczema treatment sooner. We ask all patients to sign a Medical Release Form, which will be sent to your email address. After you sign the document, we will fax the request and work with your outside doctor’s office to obtain your records.

Then Dr. Modena will start a careful investigation of your symptoms, including the time frame and location of the rash, any personal products that you regularly use, your occupation, topical therapies or other medications you have tried, labs and biopsies previously performed, and any of history of other allergic conditions, such as food allergy, nasal/eye allergies, or asthma. He will also want to know about any other triggers of eczema, such as stress, poor sleep, or use of alcohol. Dr. Modena will often recommend allergy patch testing, which can help you identify the drivers of your eczema. It depends on the person, and many other factors, such as the severity of eczema, whether or not there is an allergic contact reaction and whether the culprit agent has been completely removed, and the extent of chronic skin changes. For those with allergic contact dermatitis, it typically takes several weeks for the rash to resolve even after the person has stopped using or being exposed to the culprit agent.

For those with hyperpigmentation or nodules (i.e. prurigo nodularis) caused by months or years of severe eczema, it often takes months for these to resolve.
