Immune Disorders in San Diego, CA

Do You Suffer from an Immune Disorder? We Can Help!

Modena Allergy + Asthma Treats Immune Disorders in San Diego

If you suffer from an immune disorder, also called an immune deficiency, your body has difficulty fighting off foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. People with an immune deficiency are more susceptible to infections than everyone else. They get more severe infections, get them more often, or get infections that won’t go away, like recurrent sinusitis or bronchitis/pneumonia. These severe infections can be life-threatening or lead to extensive complications. Alternatively, recurrent infections can lead to permanent lung or tissue changes.

Diagnosing and treating immune deficiencies in San Diego requires an immunology specialist like Dr. Brian Modena at Modena Allergy + Asthma. Dr. Modena and his team of specialists has diagnosed and treated some of the rarest primary immune deficiencies. Their targeted workup for an immune deficiency starts with specialized labs and may end with doing genetic testing or even whole-genome sequencing. If you get infections that are more severe or more often than others, schedule a consultation to learn how Modena Allergy + Asthma can help you.

What are immune deficiencies?

Restore Your Ability to Fight Infection

Simply put, an immune deficiency is a problem with your body’s immune system. The immune system is what protects us from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. To date, there are more than 200 known different forms of primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDDs), and new ones are being identified every day. The immune system is complex and so there are many many ways or opportunities for chinks in the armor. For each of these PIDDs, there are one or more weak points in the immune system machinery that results in a poor ability to fight infections. Although most of these diseases are rare, others are not too uncommon, such as common variable immune deficiency (CVID). Dr. Brian Modena and team are experts in finding and treating immune deficiencies before they cause further harm to your health.

What are the benefits of immune deficiency testing and treatments?

Sophisticated, Next-level Testing

If you suffer from an immune deficiency, it's important to make the right diagnosis and make it sooner rather than later. After a diagnosis is made, the treatment varies depending on the disease. Treatments range from curative therapies like cell transplant to the replacement of antibodies through regular infusions (intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG)). Once the correct diagnosis has been made, treatment is aimed at reducing infections and getting you back to a normal life. Yet, it will always be important for you to be regularly seen and monitored by an immunologist. By seeing an immunologist specialist at Modena Allergy + Asthma, San Diego immune disorder patients can be thoroughly evaluated and treated.

Am I a good candidate for immune deficiency testing?

Reverse the Trend

Are you constantly suffering from sinus or lung or other infections, and no one can tell you why? Have you had multiple hospitalizations for severe infections? Do you have a family history of immune disorders? Is your child constantly sick and having growth and developmental delay? If so, you may have an undiagnosed immune deficiency.

Luckily, there are experts and help out there. It starts with an appointment with an immunologist like Dr. Brian Modena or one of his providers at Modena Allergy + Asthma. We offer a range of testing and treatment options to evaluate your immune system and keep it strong and healthy.

Your Immune Testing and Treatment Procedure

Boost Immunity With The Right Treatment

Your journey starts with helping us obtain any prior medical records or testing that has already been done. Many times, there is no need to repeat blood testing, especially if they were just performed. It also means that your workup can be sped up, and you’re that much closer to getting the right answer(s). We will send you a Records Release Authorization form, sent as a DocuSign. After you sign it, we will work with your other doctors’ offices to get a copy of your records. The next step is a visit with the doctor to tell your history and do an examination. You should plan to be here for over an hour.

The doctor will then send you for specialized lab work or imaging. It typically takes two weeks for all the test results to return. Thus, your second appointment will occur roughly two weeks after your initial appointment, where the doctor will discuss your test results in detail and give you a written plan of action. Your evaluation will help you understand your immune system in much greater detail. However, there is no guarantee that you will be diagnosed with an immune disorder. In fact, we often simply reassure patients that their immune system is working and functioning well.

Have Your Questions Answered

Your San Diego immune disorder treatment depends on your diagnosis, which varies from person to person. For some patients, the diagnosis is clear, and treatment can start right away. For these patients, the impact and change in their life are often significant and immediate. For other patients, it may take weeks or months before we find an answer.

For others, we simply reassure them that their immune system is working well (and there is nothing to worry about). It all depends on you. Yet, the doctor will be with you along the way to reassure you and go over the test results.
